“Wah Ustad” is an ambitious classical and semi-classical music talent hunt reality show, conceptualised by “Dilli Gharana” in collaboration with Doordarshan. This Show will be a part of” Create in India Challenge” under the WAVES Summit 2025 (World Audio Visual Entertainment Summit) organised by Ministry of Information and Broadcasting. Aimed at promoting India’s rich cultural heritage, the show will provide a prestigious platform to young, classically trained vocalists to showcase their skills. Open to participants aged 18 and above with basic training in Hindustani or Carnatic music, Sufi singing, the program will invite global entries, combining traditional expertise with modern technology to preserve and celebrate India’s musical legacy. Divided into multiple phases, the competition will include online registration through the Dilli Durbar portal, which will be linked to Prasar Bharati portal. The selection of participants for this show will be done through video-based shortlisting to be received online, regional auditions, and will culminate into a grand national finale and crowning a winner at the prestigious event at WAVES 2025 in Mumbai.
The multi-phased journey will emphasise themes like Sufi, devotional, and semi-classical music, Sufi Music incorporating innovative rounds such as fusion performances and self-compositions. Prominent musicians, including members of Dilli Gharana, and cultural icons will form the judging panel. With 26 Episodes to be aired on Doordarshan, the show will bring in nationwide participation, culminating in a grand finale featuring the top five contestants. Apart from cash prize to the Final winner, other winners will gain mentorship opportunities, recording contracts, and recognition by dignitaries. “Wah Ustad” not only seeks to identify exceptional talent in the genre of Classical and Soulful Sufi Music but also aims to inspire the next generation of musicians, making it a hallmark of India’s cultural promotion efforts.
